Gregg Publishing Company produced a number of shorthand versions of
literature, among them this story by de Maupassant.
"Alice in Wonderland" was published in hard back, as was "The Sign of the
Four" by Arthur Conan Doyle and "Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His
Son".
One series was published boxed as "American Readings in Gregg Shorthand" and
included separate volumes of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", "The Great Stone
Face", "Rip Van Winkle", "The Man Without a Country", and "Creeds of Great
Business Men."
I have a leather-bound volume dated 1927, "Short Classics in Shorthand",
that also includes "A Christmas Carol" by Dickens. I also have a shorthand
copy of "Hamlet" in a re-written version by Charles and Mary Lamb.
These are all wonderful pieces of shorthand history, and show what the
"golden age" of Gregg Shorthand was like. If you don't have any of these
literary pieces, it's nice to have at least a sample.
They aren't particularly well-produced booklets, physically. I think up to
$10 is a fair price for "The Diamond Necklace", but I personally wouldn't
pay much more (and you might be able to find it for less). Kind of depends
on how much you want it, and how soon.
