Question on Brief Form and "r" indication

Just wondering if anyone has an answer to my question.  I am using the Anniversary Functional Method.  Earlier in the book it instructed that "r" may be indicated after a vowel by turning the circle counter clockwise (ex: compare "dare" to "day").  I came upon the brief form for "particular" and the book is not consistent with its earlier instruction!  Particular, by the book, is spelled "P-A-T" - the r indication isn't used. I would think they should abbreviate it "P-A-R-T".
Someone please clear this up, it's really irking me.
