This essay evokes one
of the most important institutions in remote places, the general store or
mercantile functioned as among the most important connections local residents
had to the wider world, providing them with the latest consumer goods, news,
and mail. More than that, as author Phyllis Fenner remembers of her grandfather’s
country store, these places served as community centers, helping to cement
